Continuing Professional Development  |  Brief Background

BRIEF BACKGROUND

Continuing professional development has been made one of the flagship programmes of the Academy of Medicine and comes under the purview of the Standing Committee on Continuing Education.

The Standing Committee on Continuing Education currenntly comprises the Master-Elect, Dr Ho Lai Yun as Chairman; and Dr Christopher Goh as well as the Chapter Chairmen and College Presidents as members. The Standing Committee advises the Council on all aspects of continuing education. It also provides recommendations to the Singapore Medical Council on specialist CME activities.

The Professional Development Division (PDD) was created in the restructured Academy Secretariat in January 2003 to oversee the coordination of the CME programmes for specialists. Under the direction of a subcommittee on distance-learning programmes chaired by Dr Christopher Goh and comprising Chapter and College representatives, the PDD is tasked to provide Distance Learning Programmes for the 35 medical registered specialties and the 6 dental specialties. A sample programme in Paediatric Medicine is now available on the website as a preview. These programmes will provide specialists, who are unable to attend CME activities, with another option to meet their CME requirements. It will be implemented in phases and by specialties.

The PDD also compiles annually Sample Calendars of CME activities that specialists may choose to participate in to obtain their core CME points for the renewal of their practising certificates. The sample calendars are compiled based on the recommendations of the Chapter Chairmen and College Presidents and the Standing Committee.
