Standing Committees of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore
There are currently 13 standing committees established under the AMS by-laws.
Chairmen and members of the Standing Committees are appointed for a term of 3 years which can be
extended for another 3 years. The members comprise of representatives from the Colleges,
non-College Chapters and any other members as determined by the Chairmen of the Committees,
subject to approval by the Council. One to two elected councillors are represented in each
standing committee as ex-officio members to serve as liaisons between the Council and Standing
Committees. Half-yearly official reports are presented to the Council by the chairman of each
standing committee.

Standing Committees on Membership
The Standing Committee on Membership is responsible for setting policies and
procedures governing membership matters; election of new fellows and appeal
process; subscriptions by fellows; disciplinary action and termination of
membership; growing of membership relations; obtains and reviews
nominations/recommendation/endorsement of distinguished academician,
visiting academician and visiting lecturer and makes recommendations
to the Council.

The Standing Committee on Continuing Professional Development reviews policies
and procedures for continuing medical education and training matters; programmes
for continuing medical education, continuing professional development; accreditation
of specialists for CME requirements; assessment and audit of CME providers/events

Standing Committee on Professional Affairs
The Standing Committee on Professional Affairs sets the policies
and procedures for professional affair matters; provide advice
on clinical practice guidelines, medical professional bodies on
new technologies and the development of specialties and subspecialties;
provides recommendations to MOH on the associated policies and procedures
governing the adoption of new technologies and the practice of new
specialties and subspecialties; generate and disseminate information
and knowledge to the public on matters related to health; independent
medical expert reports; verification of foreign visiting experts.

Standing Committee on Specialist Training and Examination
The Standing Committee on Specialist Training and Examination nominates
the representatives of AMS to JCST, subject to approval by Council;
influences the policies and procedures for postgraduate specialist
training and examination matters as well as oversees the postgraduate
medical education and postgraduate examination board.

Standing Committee on Audit
The Standing Committee on Audit is responsible for establishing
compliance levels to the Charities (IPCs) Regulations 2007;
recommending improvements where there is non-compliance to
strengthen corporate governance; covering areas concerned with
use of donations, issuance of tax deduction receipts, duty to
donors, maintenance of donation and accounting records, fund
raising appeals and expenses as listed in the Charities (IPCs)
Regulations 2007 as well as covering selective areas concerned
with management practices as listed in the By-Laws of AMS.

Standing Committee on Finance and Establishment Review
The Standing Committee on Finance and Establishment Review sets policies
and procedures governing use of resources supporting AMS operational
needs and long-term development; ensures proper books of accounts are
kept and reported; ensures internal and external audits are in place;
oversees the annual statement of accounts, annual capital and operational
budgets, Building and Endowment Funds. The Committee also oversees the
building maintenance as well as fund raising.

Standing Committee on Professional Conference Organisation
The Standing Committee on Professional Conference Organisation sets the policies,
procedures and business direction in professional congress organization; revamps
the organization of the biennial congresses of AMS; provides services for annual
scientific meetings and regional/international medical congresses; provides
services for public seminars and forums; oversees applications for travel
assistance as well as ensures financial profitability of the division.

Standing Committee on Corporate and International Relations
The Standing Committee on Corporate and International Relations is responsible for
setting the policies and procedures for raising the profile of AMS locally and
internationally, enhancing the corporate image of AMS within the medical community
and the social sphere in which AMS makes its contributions; building relationships
between AMS and other medical bodies locally and internationally; as well as building
and improving a virtual network for the exchange of information, knowledge and expertise
in common areas of interest.

The Standing Committee on Constitutional Review is responsible
for proposing revision and updating of the Memorandum and
Articles of Association; proposing revision and updating of
the By-Laws; building the relationship between AMS and Colleges
and oversees the governance of AMS.

Standing Committee on Nomination
The Standing Committee on Nominating for Master-Elect is responsible for
identifying suitable candidates from incumbent elected councillors;
requesting for and reviewing their plans for the AMS and makes
nominations to the Council.
The Standing Committee on Nominating for Councillors is responsible for
identifying possible candidates from incumbent councillors serving College
Councils, Chapter Committees or AMS Standing Committees; reviewing their
suitability and obtaining their agreement to become councillors of AMS and
making nominations to the Council.
