Programmes  |

The objectives of the Academy's website are:-

  1. To keep members updated on all programmes run by the Academy.
  2. To enhance our online professional development activities, such as the distance-learning programme, to enable members to access learning modules on our website. The programme will also be open to subscribers, including doctors in developing countries in the region, who have access to the Internet. It will allow all to enjoy the flexibility of learning at their own pace and time. With the launch of the programme, doctors can now obtain the compulsory CME points required by the Singapore Medical Council more conveniently. The renewal of the doctors' practicing certificates has been made conditional upon their accumulation of compulsory CME points.
  3. To make available information regarding our members to doctors and other specialists, and others who may require such information. Members who have not submitted their particulars may do so by printing and completing the form here.

Continuing Professional Development
The Academy conducts regular continuing professional development (CPD) activities in the form of lectures and symposia (by visiting experts and local specialists) as well as conferences. To facilitate CPD for the busy clinician, we have commenced online professional development activities.

Quality Assurance Programme for Specialists
The Academy has developed a pilot programme on self-appraisal to allow for a self-directed appraisal, as well as to allow our medical colleagues and patients to appraise us. The focus is on facilitating self-awareness of core professional competencies. Three types of questionnaires are available to members on the Academy’s secured website. Members can download these 3 sets of questionnaires via the Member Login on the Academy’s homepage. To access to this restricted secured area, Fellows must key in their MCR/DBR No. and password.

Annals
The Annals is the official medical and dental journal of the Academy, and is circulated to all members of the Academy. It is an indexed journal of the US National Library of Medicine (Index Medicus) and has recently been included in the Science Citation Index - Expanded, ISI Alerting Services, and Current Contents/Clinical Medicine.

Practice Guidelines
As the body responsible for education and maintaining standards, the Academy has taken the lead to issue to its members practice guidelines defining the criteria for the proper use of certain procedures and practices that involve high-technology medicine, and specifying the specialists who are qualified to perform them, the training they should have and the optimal facilities required.

Congresses
The Academy regularly organises congresses and scientific meetings to enhance the continuing professional development of specialists in Singapore. Each Chapter of the Academy organises an annual scientific meeting while the Academy biennially organises and hosts the Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine. When requests are made, the Academy also co-organises scientific meetings with other professional bodies in Singapore.

Advanced Specialist Training and Accreditation
The advanced specialty training (AST) programmes, which are common to all 35 registered specialties, are administered by the Joint Committee on Specialist Training (JCST). The JCST is appointed by the Specialist Accreditation Board (SAB) to set the professional standards for specialist training and establish the framework for assuring the quality of specialist training in Singapore. The JCST also oversees the accreditation of training departments and institutions. The JCST Secretariat is serviced jointly by the Academy of Medicine, Singapore and the Division of Graduate Medical Studies (DGMS), National University of Singapore. The Specialist Training Committees (STCs) for the 35 specialties report to the JCST. They are responsible for conducting specialist exit assessments and examinations. The Director, DGMS and the Master of the Academy are appointed as co-chairmen of the JCST. Four other representatives from the Academy are appointed as members to this committee.

Induction Comitia
An Induction Comitia and Dinner is organised annually to admit new Fellows into the Academy.

Restructuring of Chapters into Specialist Colleges
With the rapid changes in Medicine in the past few years, the Academy has had to re-examine its role and formulate a strategy to maintain its position as the leading organisation for medical and dental specialists in Singapore. The Academy has restructured its Chapters with critical mass into Colleges so that they would be on par with the various Royal Colleges and other overseas specialist bodies.

The following Colleges were incorporated on 17 August 2004:

College of Anaesthesiologists

College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists

College of Paediatrics and Child Health

College of Physicians

College of Radiologists

College of Surgeons

These Colleges are tasked to take up a leading role in maintaining the standards of practice and developing the respective specialties. The Colleges within the Academy are separate legal entities and have autonomy as part of their integral structure. This autonomy will allow individual colleges to engage specialty societies and like bodies globally in the provision of specialty-specific continuing professional development (CPD) activities for its Fellows.

The Academy will take the following steps to strengthen the Specialist Colleges:

  1. Work with the NUS Division of Graduate Medical Studies, JCST and SAB to include the Colleges in conducting basic specialty training, advanced specialist training and exit assessments/examinations.
  2. Devolve the development and execution of specialty-specific CPD activities to the Colleges. This will include the determination of core specialty CME.

The Academy through its Colleges and Chapters will continue to:

  1. Develop and maintain uniform requirements and standards for training across all specialties
  2. Develop and coordinate non-specialty specific, general CPD activities, for example, programmes on professionalism for the continued professional development of our Fellows.
  3. Explore and develop programmes with the Colleges to re-certify specialists through CPD/CME activities.
