FORMATION OF THE CHAPTER OF FAMILY MEDICINE PHYSICIANS
Recognising the growing importance that Family Physicians play and the need for more well trained doctors to provide better holistic, less fragmented and more integrated care at the community level amidst an ageing population, the resolution on the formation of the Chapter of Family Medicine Physicians was passed at the Academy's 36th Annual General Meeting on 14 June 2014.
OBJECTIVES OF THE CHAPTER OF FAMILY MEDICINE PHYSICIANS
- To promote and advance Family Medicine as a specialty in Singapore
- To promote interdisciplinary medical education in Family Medicine
MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA AT THE FORMATION OF THE CHAPTER
A registered medical practitioner who
- Is registered in the Family Physician Register; and
- Has completed the advanced family medicine training programme conducted by the College of Family Physicians (CFPS) and exited with the Fellowship of the College FCFP.
CFPS Fellows who were conferred before the advanced FM training programme commenced in 1999 and are registered in the Family Physician Register are also eligible.
A total of 66 family physicians joined the Academy in 2014. History was made on 25 October 2014 with the induction of the first batch of 24 Family Medicine Physicians at the Academy’s second Induction Comitia 2014 held at the Health Promotion Board.
The Chapter held its Inaugural General Meeting on 17 January 2015, followed by the first Executive Committee meeting that same evening.
RECOGNITION OF FAMILY MEDICINE AS A SPECIALTY
The Chapter of Family Medicine Physicians welcomes the recognition of Family Medicine as the 36th specialty in Singapore by the Specialist Accreditation Board, with the support of the Ministry of Health, effective 1 November 2025.
With this recognition, eligibility for Fellowship in the Chapter will be aligned with the Academy’s Memorandum and Articles of Association (Article 12).
From 1 November 2025, applicants for Fellowship (FAMS) under the Chapter of Family Medicine Physicians must hold specialist accreditation in Family Medicine by the Specialist Accreditation Board.
