The Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine (SMCM) is a biennial meeting bringing together academicians, specialists and medical professionals from Singapore, Malaysia and around the region, to address important and major healthcare issues and trends, debate on emerging challenges, share clinical experiences, and establish vibrant network for research collaboration in the interest of advancing the art and science of medicine.

The theme for the 2015 meeting is ‘Greater Integration for Better Patient Care’.  The Congress will provide an excellent opportunity to relearn our clinical medicine from our colleagues.

Gordon Arthur Ransome Oration and Runme Shaw Memorial Lecture are hallmarks and keynote addresses of the Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine.  Invitation is now open to Fellows for nominations.

Brief

Professor Gordon Arthur Ransome (1910 – 1978) was the founding Master of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.  A legendary pioneer in medicine in Singapore, he practiced at the Singapore General Hospital for 33 years and mentored most of the senior physicians and surgeons of today. In 1970, to honour his life and contributions to medicine in Singapore, his friends and colleagues created the Gordon Arthur Ransome Oration which has served as the keynote address at the biennial Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine.  The first oration was delivered in 1971 by Past Master Seah Cheng Siang.

In 1982, the Academy inaugurated the Runme Shaw Lecture in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee of the Academy.  Tan Sri Dr Runme Shaw (1901 – 1985), Chairman and Founder of the Shaw Organisation of Singapore and a philanthropist who started the Shaw Foundation, contributed S$120,000 for the establishment of the Lecture.  This lectureship is set up to promote the advancement of medicine on an international basis.  The first Runme Shaw Lecturer was Dr John Baxter, Professor of Medicine and Professor of Biochemistry, University of California, United States of America.

Subjects offered for this Oration could be in any of the following areas in relation to:-

•          Political

•          Ethical

•          Educational

Subjects offered for this lecture must be scientific in content and relevant to the medical or related profession.

Nomination of Orator

Nominations for this Oration will be invited from members of the Academy in Singapore.  The invitation for nominations will be circulated to all members of the Academy.

Selection of the Orator

The selection of the Orator will be done by the Council of the Academy of Medicine on the recommendation of the Board of Censors.  The decision of the Council shall be final.

Announcement of the Orator

The name of the Orator shall be announced before the date of the Congress.

Medallion / Honorarium

The Orator shall be presented with a gold medallion

The honorarium for the Lecture shall be S$5,000.00.

In addition, a business class return air passage and accommodation for the Lecturer during the stay throughout the duration of the Congress shall be paid for by the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.

Publication of Oration

The Academy reserves the right to publish the Gordon Arthur Ransome Oration in full in the Annals, Academy of Medicine, Singapore
