By Dr Gervais Wansaicheong - February 2012

An ultrasound seminar was organized on 4 Feb 2012 and 5 Feb 2012 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia under the auspices of the Sihanouk Hospital Centre for HOPE, HOPE worldwide Diagnostic Center, Department of Imaging and Interventional Radiology of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and College of Radiologists, Singapore.

The aim of the symposium was to provide radiologists in Cambodia an opportunity to see how ultrasound imaging can be used beyond the abdomen. This included breast, gynaecologic, musculoskeletal and head and neck imaging. Associate Professor Ong Chiou Li and Dr Gervais Wansaicheong represented the College, with Professors Anil Ahuja and David Griffith from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Many of the radiologists who attended the symposium have some experience with ultrasound imaging but want to learn more about how to use it in a practical way. As ultrasound imaging does not use ionizing radiation, is cost - effective and specific in diagnosis, it is an ideal modality for developing countries. The radiologists showed a keen interest in the hands - on portion and asked questions about how to implement the lessons in their daily practice.

Cambodia has overcome adversity and difficulties in its development since independence.   There is a sense of excitement and drive in the people encountered at the hospital and the city. Many challenges continue to confront the provision of healthcare, just like any other developing country. It is hoped that in a small way, the College was able to provide a stepping stone for the Cambodian Radiologists to continue on their journey to advancing the health of their people.
