From Recognition to Stewardship: CFMP Leadership Summit 2026
Leading Family Medicine in the Specialist Era | Honouring our Legacy | Shaping our Future

On 19 September 2026, the Chapter of Family Medicine Physicians convened leaders, pioneers and colleagues from across the fraternity for its first Leadership Summit following the formal recognition of Family Medicine as Singapore's 36th medical specialty on 1 November 2025. The Summit combined commemoration, professional dialogue and clinical learning. Through the pioneer tribute, leadership roundtable and a Family Medicine Specialists-led CME and MME programme, participants reflected on the discipline's development and considered what Family Medicine Specialists should contribute in the specialist era.
Director-General of Health Professor Kenneth Mak described recognition as the beginning of a new responsibility:
“Recognition is not the destination... it's the beginning of a new journey. And it's an invitation to lead.”
Responding to Greater Complexity
Professor Mak noted that episodic, organ-by-organ specialist care alone cannot carry the growing load of ageing, multimorbidity and repeated transitions between hospital, community and home. Family Medicine contributes continuity, integration and relationships that remain steady when different parts of a patient's care are changing.
The Family Medicine Specialist brings advanced capability to this work: breadth of expertise, depth of professional judgement and the ability to integrate care around the person rather than any single disease or episode of care. This contribution is especially important when treatments interact, priorities compete and no single disease or specialty tells the whole story.
Honouring the Foundations
The Summit honoured four pioneers whose vision and perseverance helped establish the professional and institutional foundations of Family Medicine in Singapore: Dr Lee Suan Yew, the Visionary; A/Professor Lim Lean Huat, the Builder; A/Professor Goh Lee Gan, the Architect; and the late A/Professor Cheong Pak Yean, the Integrator.
Their work preceded specialist recognition. They developed training pathways, strengthened professional institutions, established standards and created a home for a discipline centred on comprehensive, continuous and person-centred care. A commemorative film and the Stewards of Health montage connected their contributions with the responsibilities of the generations that follow.
Demonstrating Meaningful Value
The Master of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore, Dr Wong Chiang Yin, emphasised that the art of Family Medicine remains at least as important as its science. Advanced Family Medicine requires not only evidence, but also the judgement to apply it wisely in the context of real lives, multiple conditions, uncertainty and competing priorities.
He then posed the question that makes specialist recognition accountable:
“How does a specialist family physician demonstrate value to all the major healthcare stakeholders?”
That value must ultimately be discernible to patients and families, clinical teams and the wider healthcare system. Formal recognition provides a platform; its significance will depend on how Family Medicine Specialists’ expertise improves care, strengthens teams and enables more complex needs to be managed effectively in the community.
From Dialogue to Direction
Roundtable discussions examined the distinctive value Family Medicine Specialists should contribute over the next decade, the capabilities and structures required, and how the profession can exercise collective stewardship.
One aspiration emerging from the Summit is for the Chapter to remain a professional home where Family Medicine Specialists across settings can come together to articulate and demonstrate where Family Medicine Specialists’ expertise adds unique value in complex care, particularly at transitions, in reducing treatment burden, and in helping patients navigate and align care plans with their goals and priorities. Through this community, Family Medicine Specialists can build shared understanding, develop professional consensus, share innovations across practice settings, and generate practice-based evidence on approaches that strengthen continuity, integration, and person-centred care. Equally important is continued engagement with colleagues from other specialties and care sectors to co-design models of care that bridge organisational boundaries and better meet the needs of patients living with complexity.
Recognition was the milestone. Stewardship is the work ahead.
