What is forensic psychiatry and what do forensic psychiatrists do?

Forensic Psychiatry was initially and simply defined as the branch of psychiatry that deals with issues arising in the interface between psychiatry and the law. Comprehensively, it is a sub-specialty of psychiatry in which scientific and clinical expertise is applied in legal contexts involving criminal correctional, regulatory and legislative and in specialized clinical consultations in areas such as risk

Good practices in the prescription of benzodiazepines and other sedative hypnotics

Together with the National Addictions Management Service, the Section of Addiction Psychiatry published a set of practice guideline titled [Good practices in the prescription of benzodiazepines and other sedative hypnotics] at the Singapore Medical Journal.

Many people find it puzzling that Tobacco Use Disorder is classified as a mental illness under the DSM-5. In fact, a smoker most often doesn’t consult a psychiatrist to kick the habit. Most smoking
cessation aids are sold over the counter as nicotine replacement products and can be dispensed without a prescription. This ease of self-medication belies the often-intractable task of smoking cessation. Read More.

SECTION OF NEUROSTIMULATION - INAUGURAL SINGAPORE ELECTROCONVULSIVE THERAPY & NEUROSTIMULATION COURSE

The Section of Neurostimulation will be organising the Inaugural Singapore Electroconvulsive Therapy & Neurostimulation course on 28 October and 1 November 2017.

The aim of the course is to help with the continual education of both junior and senior doctors practicing psychiatry in Singapore and the local region with the latest evidence and practice in Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and newer forms of Neurostimulation (rTMS & tDCS). This will also help train local junior doctors for providing ECT locally and with local institutional ECT accreditation.

SECTION OF CHILD & ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRISTS - DIAGNOSTIC DILEMMAS IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

The Section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists under the College of Psychiatrists organised a lecture by A/Prof John Fayyad on “Diagnostic Dilemmas in Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Disorders”  which was held on 26 November 2016.

 

The lecture offers practical pointers on how to approach diagnostic challenges such as differentiating from ADHD and how to disentangle Autism Spectrum presentations from ADHD combined with other developmental delays as well as how to plan effective treatment in such cases. The lecture targets Child Psychiatrists, Allied Health Professionals, GPs and Paediatricians (Private and Public Sectors).
