Gastroenterologists are specialist physicians with dedicated training in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the digestive system which includes the oesophagous, the stomach, the small and large intestine (colon), liver, pancreas and the gall bladder and biliary system.
Gastroenterologists manage and treat symptoms and disorders arising from the digestive tract, e.g. abdominal discomfort/pain, diarrhea, constipation, bleeding from the digestive tract, jaundice, hepatitis as well as cancers of the digestive system, liver and heptobiliary tract.
Endoscopy is done by gastroenterologists both to help diagnose and treat disorders of the gastrointestinal tract and biliary systems (diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy). These procedures include gastroscopy / colonoscopy / Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography / Endoscopic ultrasound / small intestinal enteroscopy and capsule endoscopy.
Gastroenterologists play a major role in the assessment and treatment of all kinds of liver disease. They actively participate in the management of liver transplant patients.
Gastroenterologists look into the nutritional needs of ill patients and specialize in administering enteral and parenteral nutrition.
