Dental Public Health is the dental specialty which champions and advocates the prevention and control of oral-related diseases as well as the promotion of oral health through systematic and evidence-based individual and community efforts.  Oral diseases are common among the population.  These diseases can exert significant impact on individuals and affect their overall quality of life.  A growing awareness of oral-systemic interactions has also fuelled greater interest in preventing common oral diseases.  Many oral diseases can be prevented with the appropriate planning and implementation dental health policies, oral health education and oral health promoting programmes.  The surveillance of oral diseases in the population also constitutes a significant part of dental public health efforts.  Such disease surveillance may in turn highlight the needs or health disparities in the community, support the planning, development and evaluation of appropriate oral health programmes and services to enhance the oral health of the community.

The scope of Dental Public Health includes:

  • Epidemiology and Surveillance of Oral Diseases
  • Community Dentistry
