Oral Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) is one of the seven recognized dental specialty of the Singapore Dental Council since 2008. The scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery encompasses diagnosis and the medical and surgical management of various conditions of the mouth, teeth, jaws and facial structures.

OMS surgeons have to undergo 3 years of fulltime postgraduate in-hospital specialist surgical training. During which, residents will spend significant time rotating through related medical and surgical fields such as Otolaryngology, Anaesthesiology, General Surgery and Plastic Surgery and are actively involved in emergency medicine and handle facial trauma in the acute setting. After completion of academic training, OMS surgeons have to practice at a public institution for another 3 years to gain experience managing a broad range of procedures before the Singapore Dental Council grants them specialist status. After such rigorous training and exposure, OMS surgeons are well equipped to handle conditions such as:

  1. Minor oral surgery for impacted teeth and oral pathology
  2. Oral and Maxillofacial infections
  3. Cysts and benign tumors of the mouth and jaws
  4. Maxillofacial trauma
  5. Orthognathic surgery
  6. Cleft lip and palate
  7. Oral cancer
  8. Oral Medicine
  9. Dental and facial chronic pain
  10. Pre-prosthetic surgery
  11. Temporomandibular joint disorders
  12. Dental and facial Implant surgery
  13. Laser procedures in the Maxillofacial region
  14. Botox and Fillers injection to the facial region
  15. Aesthetic surgery procedures in the facial region including skeletal recontouring
  16. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea management

With such an extensive scope of work, OMS surgeons should stay current with the latest updates in order to continue being an asset to the medical and dental community and to deliver high quality service to our patients. Therefore, the chapter will engage the surgeons and strive to bring good quality updates from local and overseas speakers to meet the needs of the OMS community.
