Periodontists are dentists who specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement and maintenance of dental implants.  They receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of post graduation education beyond basic dental school. Besides using the latest evidence-based techniques for diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease, they are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures.

Cases treated by periodontists include patients with severe gum disease. The treatment offered includes initial periodontal therapy where scaling and root planing (the infected surface of the root is cleaned) is performed. They also treat patients with severe gum problems with a range of surgical procedures. In addition, periodontists are specially trained in the placement and maintenance of dental implants, and the prevention and management of peri-implant diseases.

Patients who present with moderate to severe levels of periodontal disease, and complex cases, are best managed by a joint partnership between the general dentist and periodontist.

In 2008, the Ministry of Health set up the Dental Specialist Accreditation Board to recognize training of dental specialists in their respective fields and pave the way for their registration with the Singapore Dental Council. In 2009, the first Periodontology exit exams were conducted as a part of this accreditation process.
