CHAPTER OF SPECIAL CARE DENTISTS

Special Care Dentistry involves oral healthcare for people with complex needs, including those with significant physical, medical, developmental, cognitive or psychological conditions that may limit their ability to receive routine dental care in an outpatient setting.

Timely access to and management in various dental settings, together with preventive care and co-management with patients’ healthcare, allied health and social care providers, are key cornerstones of this field. The range of patients cared for in Special Care Dentistry overlaps with younger patients with complex needs managed by paediatric dental specialists. Specialists in Special Care Dentistry may subsequently take over their oral healthcare as they transition into adulthood.

Special Care Dentistry is one of the dental specialties recognised by the Singapore Dental Council (SDC). After graduating with a basic dental degree, candidates must complete a three-year postgraduate programme at an accredited dental school, followed by a minimum of two years of full-time clinical practice and completion of the Specialists Exit Assessment before accreditation as a specialist by the Singapore Dental Council.
