The COVID-19 pandemic has crippled healthcare systems and economy, and killed millions of people globally since its emergence in early 2020. Scientific research has rapidly developed accurate diagnostics and effective treatment, and tracked the evolution of different strains of SARS-CoV-2 since 2020. While face masks and social distancing have been effective in mitigating the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the return to normalcy requires a high level of herd immunity that cannot be attained rapidly by natural infection. Through unprecedented public and private partnership globally, the end of 2020 heralded the first evidence of highly effective and safe COVID-19 vaccines. The year 2021 is the year of COVID-19 vaccine implementation. Singapore started its national COVID-19 vaccination in January 2021.
