3 July 2015
Dear Fellow Academicians
At the closing deadline on 2nd July 2015, the Academy received one (1) nomination for the post of Master-Elect.
I am pleased to announce Dr Selan Sayampanathan is Master-Elect, 2015-2016, and shall take over from me as Master from 2016 for a 2-year term.
Dr Sayampanathan graduated from the National University of Singapore with MBBS in 1982 and obtained his Fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS) in 1990. He received his Orthopaedic Surgery training in UK between 1990 and 1994 and has been in private practice the past 17 years.
He is no stranger to the Academy. Having joined as a Fellow in 1998, he has been an active member of the Academy Council the past 8 years. He has served as an elected Council member 2007-2011, an appointed Council member 2011-2013, Scribe 2013-2015, and Chairman, Organizing Committee, 49th Singapore Malaysia Congress of Medicine. He was also a member of the Council of the College of Surgeons, Singapore (CSS) 2007-2009, Vice-President 2009-2011, President 2011-2013 and Immediate Past President 2013-2014.
Serving people is in his “DNA”. He joined the St John Singapore in 1971 and became a committee member of the St John Ambulance Association from 1998-2012. He was appointed Director of the Association in 2012, responsible for designing and delivering the entire First Aid training curriculum. He is now the Vice-Chairman of St John Singapore. In addition, he is an active member in the grassroots for the past 18 years. For his services to the society, he was conferred the Public Service Medal (PBM) in 2009.
With his contributions in the Academy Council in various capacities, his experiences in leading one of the biggest Colleges of the Academy, his contact with and understanding of the needs of clinicians especially in the private sector, his active involvement in training of paramedical professionals in St John, and his track records of serving the public and people in the community, I am certain that he will further enhance the Academy’s effort to serve its Fellows and elevate the Academy’s national standing in Singapore.
Please join me in congratulating him and we look forward to his services as Master-Elect 2015-2016 and Master 2016-2018.
I am pleased to announce that the Academy of Medicine, Singapore Council of 2015-2016 was formed at the conclusion of our 37th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 13 June 2015.
I wish to convey our heartfelt thanks to Wong Kok Seng who has contributed to the Academy as Elected Council Members for the past 6 years. Similarly, our sincere appreciation to the outgoing Appointed Council Members, Philip Tseng, Benjamin Long, Tan Hak Koon, Victor Samuel, Tay Jam Chin, Tchoyoson Lim and Esuvaranathan Kesavan, for their excellent leadership of their respective Colleges as well as contribution to the Academy.
For the next 12 months, the Council will concentrate on the following areas:
(a) Prepare our Fellows for the transition from the current CME system to the Maintenance of Competency (MOC) system, e.g. design specialty-specific Self Learning Modules (SLM)
(b) Re-organize and re-group the training and educational activities of the Academy forming an Office of Education. A team of clinician educators will be appointed for a term of 3 to 6 years to take charge of the Office. This is to ensure continuity, robust oversight and seamless coordination of education and training programmes such as SRS Diploma Programme, ITEs, MHPE, training of Examiners for Exit Exam, Fellowship Training Programme, etc.
(c) Continue to minimise cost, spend prudently, solicit donations, and build financial reserve.
This biennial 49th Singapore Malaysia Congress of Medicine, entitled "Greater Integration for Better Patient Care" is around the corner. It will take place on 31 July - 2 August 2015 at the Academia @ SingHealth. The detailed scientific programme is available at its website.
Complementary admissions are extended to All Fellows of the Academy for following sessions:-
In recognition of our senior Fellows’ long standing allegiance and valuable support of the Fellowship, we are pleased to extend a special invitation to Fellows who have been with Academy for > 25 years (in good standing) and those who are active exempted.
For Fellows who have reached their 25th Anniversary with the Academy, you will also be presented a limited edition of AMS Silver Jubilee Medal when you attend the 18th Runme Shaw Memorial Lecture on 1 August 2015.
I look forward to your active participation at the Congress.
Best Wishes
