Induction Comitia
An Induction Comitia and Dinner is organised annually to admit new
Fellows into the Academy.
Orations/Lectures/Awards and Medals (in alphabetical order)
Academy of Medicine Gold Medal
Established in 1989, the Medal is awarded annually to the best student in
the Pathology and Microbiology who has successfully completed the
Second Professional BDS Examination.
Chapter of Paediatricians Lecture
Established in 1998, the Lecture is open to distinguished members of
the medical profession by invitation (local as well as overseas). The
Lecture is held biennially in conjunction with the Annual Scientific
Meeting of the Chapter of Paediatricians, Academy of Medicine, Singapore.
College of Surgeons Medal
In recognition of the effort of the best performing Advanced Surgical Trainees
(ASTs) in the ten (10) surgical specialties, as well as, to encourage the ASTs
to excel in their exit examinations, the College of Surgeons has decided to
establish the College of Surgeons medal as an annual award as approved by
the Council 2008-2009 at the 2nd College Board Meeting held on 24 July 2008.
The idea was mooted by the Council 2007-2008 at the 5th College Board Meeting
held on 5 February 2008.
College of Surgeons Lecture
This Lectureship would be organised annually at any of the College
Meetings during the calender year (Jan – Dec). Nominations will
be received from the College Council Members for confirmation by the College Council.
Distinguished Academician
The Council of the Academy may, on the recommendation of its Chapters,
appoint one distinguished overseas visitor per year as a Distinguished
Academician for the year.
G A Ransome Gold Medal
Established in 1978 in memory of the late Emeritus Professor Sir
Gordon Arthur Ransome, the Medal is awarded annually to the candidate
who has distinguished himself in the M Med (Internal Medicine) Examination.
Galloway Memorial Lectureship
Instituted in 1959 in memory of the late Sir David Galloway, the
Lectureship is open annually to all Academicians and practitioners of
Medicine and its allied fields.
Gordon Arthur Ransome Oration
Established in 1971, the Oration is open to distinguished members of
the medical profession and the public by invitation. The Oration is
held biennially in conjunction with the Congress of Medicine in Singapore.
Joint Lectureship of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore and the Royal College
of Surgeons of Edinburgh
Established in November 1994, the Joint Lectureship serves as an ongoing exchange
between the College and the Chapter.
Runme Shaw Memorial Lecture
Established in 1982, the Lecture is open to distinguished members
of the medical profession by invitation. It is held biennially in
conjunction with the Congress of Medicine in Singapore.
Seah Cheng Siang Gold Medal
The Medal, supported by the Seah Cheng Siang Memorial Fund, is
awarded annually to the most outstanding candidate who has highest
marks in the clinical section of the examination leading to the
degree of Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine).
Seah Cheng Siang Memorial Lecture
Established in 1991, the Lecture is held annually in conjunction with the
Annual Scientific Meeting of the Chapter of Physicians, Academy of Medicine,
Singapore. It is open to distinguished members of the medical profession by
invitation (local as well as overseas).
Visiting Academician
The Chairman of each Chapter of the Academy may recommend to Council
the appointment of up to two Visiting Academicians a year. Each Visiting
Academician shall stay at least two days and deliver at least one lecture
to members of the host Chapter.
Visiting Lecturer
The Chairman of each Chapter of the Academy may recommend to
Council the appointment of Visiting Lecturers. Each Visiting
Lecturer shall deliver at least one lecture to members of the host Chapter.
Yahya Cohen Memorial Lecture
In recognition of the outstanding contributions to the development
of surgery in Singapore by Dr Yahya Cohen, the 1st Chairman of the
Chapter of Surgeons and a past Master of the Academy, the 1994 Chapter
of Surgeons has decided to establish the Yahya Cohen Memorial Lecture
in his honour. The Lectureship will be presented annually and the lecture
shall take place at an event or activity organized by the College of Surgeons,
Singapore. Only Fellows of the College of Surgeons shall be eligible for the Lectureship.
Young Surgeon’s Award
The First Joint Meeting of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and
Chapter of Surgeons, Academy of Medicine, Singapore in November 1984
inaugurated a Surgeon-in-Training Award. The Award was presented to the
best original unpublished paper read by a Surgeon-in-Training. Surgical
trainees from Singapore and other countries submitted excellent and
commendable work. The six papers which were subsequently shortlisted
for presentation at the Award session were of remarkable standard and
quality. The College of Surgeons, Singapore (then Chapter of Surgeons)
agreed that the Award should be perpetuated to encourage young surgical
trainees to be research-oriented and to upgrade their work. The Award
will be presented biennially at the Annual Combined Surgical Meeting /
Annual Scientific Meeting or in the Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine
when it is held in Singapore. The Award will be made for the best original
unpublished paper read by a young surgeon.
Academy of Medicine Singapore Travel Assistance Only Local Fellows of
the Academy of Medicine, Singapore are eligible for consideration for travel assistance
from the Common Fund for Advancement of Medicine. Applicants must be Fellows with the
Academy for at least 3 years and be current with their subscription. Please read the

Chapter of Surgeons Travelling Fellowship Initiated in 1997 by Dr V K Pillay, a Past Master,
the Fellowship is to enable young surgeons to participate in teaching programmes in the Asia
Pacific Region or collaborate with medical institutions/colleges in this region.
