On 21 July 2017, the Academy held its Induction Comitia at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel in conjunction with the 51st Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine (SMCM) and the 60th anniversary of the Academy. Close to 500 attendees comprising overseas guests, Past Masters, Fellows, inductees and representatives from medical organisations gathered that evening which was graced by the Guest-of-Honour, His Excellency Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam, President of the Republic of Singapore and Patron of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.

Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon, the 23rd Gordon Arthur Ransome Orator, was conferred Honorary Fellowship of the Academy that evening. The certificate for Honorary Fellowship, the highest honour that the Academy could bestow, was presented by the Patron of the Academy, President Dr Tony Tan.

A total of 100 new inductees and 22 Presidents of Overseas Colleges were formally conferred Fellowship of the Academy at the Induction Comitia. Dr Lee Kheng Hock, Chairman of the Chapter of Family Medicine Physicians led his fellow inductees in the Inductees' Pledge.

Also held in conjunction with the Diamond Jubilee was the official launch of the AMS Charter at the event.  The fundamental principles of the Charter are the primacy of patient welfare, patient autonomy and social justice.  The Academy aspires to adopt an active dedication to the principles of professionalism, which entails not only their personal commitment to the welfare of their patients but also collective efforts to improve the health care system for the welfare of society.

At the Induction Comitia, Immediate Past Master of the Academy, Dr Lim Shih Hui was presented with a Past Master Medallion.  Dr Lim Shih Hui had served as Master of the Academy from Year 2012 to 2016.

 

The Academy also awarded certificates to the graduates of the inaugural intake of the Master of Health Professions Education by Maastricht University in collaboration with the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.  The Induction Comitia also witnessed the graduation of 29 trainees who had successfully completed their diplomas under the Staff Registrar Scheme.

That evening, the Academy also presented a token of appreciation to Dr Tan Eng King who had served as Annals Editor from Year 2010 to 2017.  In addition, the Annals Best Publications Award 2016 to the top three papers based on clinical impact, study design and research methodologies, data analysis and quality of data interpretation and balanced discussion was also presented.  The Annals Gold Reviewer Award 2016 was also presented to the reviewers for their outstanding reviews done for the Annals.

The highlight of the evening was the 23rd Gordon Arthur Ransome Oration which was delivered by Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon. The Gordon Arthur Ransome Oration, proudly esteemed as the highlight of the Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine, is the keynote address delivered at the Induction Comitia. His lecture was entitled “Law and Medicine: Profession of Honour, Service and Excellence”.
